Rare Point of Bipartisan Agreement in Health Care
|
|
|
(Former Department of Health and Human Services Secretaries Kathleen Sebelius and Alex Azar at last week's panel)
What Happened: Last week, former Department of Health and Human Services Secretaries Alex Azar and Kathleen Sebelius, each having served under different administrations, joined together in their support of site-neutral payment reform at a panel hosted by Paragon Health Institute.
Why It Matters: Currently, patients, employers and taxpayers are charged billions more for routine health care services simply based on where care is received, even when seeing the same doctor.
What’s Next: Congress can act to pass site-neutral legislation, saving money for patients and taxpayers while also reducing incentives for harmful consolidation.

Criminal Justice

- In the Milbank Quarterly, Harold Pollack and Eshan Dosani make the case that public health and criminal justice issues are intimately linked, and that more investment in research at that intersection is needed.

- The Colorado Consumer Health Initiative’s recent survey of more than 1,400 Coloradans reveals that more than 2 in 3 respondents delayed or went without health care due to cost in the last 12 months and nearly 3 in 4 experienced at least 1 health care affordability burden in the past year.
- A poll from the American Heart Association finds the majority of patients fear a return of surprise medical bills.
- A joint story by the Commonwealth Fund, PerryUndem, and Arnold Ventures shows how costs continue to be a major concern for Medicare enrollees, leading some to forgo taking their medication as prescribed.
Higher Education
- It's bipartisan: a survey from New America shows that both Democrats and Republicans are unhappy about the state of higher education.
- Third Way discusses how $20 billion in taxpayer dollars, allocated to accredited colleges that graduate fewer than half their bachelor’s degree-seeking students, could have been spent to improve student outcomes.
- The American Enterprise Institute, Education Counsel, and the Century Foundation released a report on financing graduate education.

- "[Yun Chuan] loves his bamboo. He's really comfortable in his habitat.
