A Process and Outcome Evaluation of Automated Body-Worn Camera Review Technology in 3 Arizona Police Departments

This project uses a randomized controlled trial to study the impact of automated body worn camera review in Arizona.

Grant Recipient: Arizona State University

Principal Investigator(s): Michael White, Aili Malm

Term: 2024 – 2025

Funding: $501,238

Summary: This study employs a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design to evaluate the planning, implementation, and impact of Truleo’s AI-driven BWC review in three Arizona law enforcement agencies: the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the Apache Junction Police Department, and the Casa Grande Police Department.

We will test the effects of the Truleo technology on important outcomes including: officer/supervisor perceptions; Truleo-generated performance metrics for officers (professionalism and risk) and community members (gratitude, risk, and noncompliance); officer activity including proactive stops, tickets/citations, searches, seizures (e.g., hit rates), and arrests; and rare but important events including use of force, complaints, and injuries.

We will compare these outcomes within and across study conditions to determine whether Truleo produced officer and community member behavioral change.
